Excellent news for the DHR! The UCLG Executive Committee has unanimously decided to support the DHR – marking a big step towards the ultimate goal of having it approved by the Member States of the UN.
Hopes were high following a presentation in Strasbourg in May of 2018 and marked interest from the UCLG Political Council during an Executive Meeting held in Madrid in November of 2018. Those hopes were exceeded when the UCLG Executive Committee voted unanimously to ensure that the DHR be formally recognized, with the signature of UCLG scheduled to be added to the Declaration at an official event to be held in Durban in November. The soon to be signatory considered that the text was in line with UCLG’s strategy on ecological transition, intergenerational cohesion and peace-building. This approval was accompanied by a recommendation for UCLG members to circulate this text where possible. The Executive Board approved the following recommendation: support the Universal Declaration of Humankind Rights so that it may soon be approved by the Member States of the UN.
This development marks a major step forward for the universal recognition of the DHR given that UCLG has a membership base of approximately 240,000 cities and local governments from around the world and which represent more than 5 billion people!
